Bekal Fort – Best of the places to visit in Kasaragod.
The huge Bekal Fort lies about 16 km to the south of the northernmost district in Kerala, Kasaragod. It is among Kerala’s largest forts and has been maintained impeccably over the years. It rises to 130 feet above sea level and is situated on a 35km-long headland. Comfortably set on steep hills by the sea, the fort provides an impressive beach view. It is one of the most visited sites in Kerala, constructed using laterite slabs and with a polygonal form. There are many factors that added to the website’s popularity. The key attractions include an observation tower filled with beautiful peepholes, the Anjaneya Temple with its famous masonry, and two laterite- Theyyam sculptures. Also, important places in the region are an ancient mosque founded by Tipu Sultan and numerous underground passages. A rock garden was designed in the parking area using laterite, which is in itself an architectural wonder. On the beach, trees were planted together with the development of a splendid walkway that makes it easier to cross the beach and enjoy its sights. Ranipuram is a legendary tourism destination in Kerala’s northern edge. It is situated 750 m above sea level, in Kasaragod. This makes for a great picnic spot where one can also meet the occasional elephant herd. Identified once as Madathumala, it borders Karnataka and boasts some of the area’s best trekking trails. Ananthapura Lake Temple
The Shrine of Ananthapura Dam, the only dam shrine in Kerala, sits at the northern tip of Kerala. This majestic temple is located in a rectangular pool, provided with daily spring water. It is called the moolasthanam (original residence) of Lord Ananthapadmanabha, the god of the famed Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. This 9th-century temple is situated 30 km from Bekal in the district of Kasaragod. The view from the temple of the hillocks is incredibly popular. Babia, a vegetarian crocodile and guardian of the temple, is popular with all tourists. The trip to the temple itself is incredibly quiet and cool.
Madhur Temple
The holy bath on the banks of the river, surrounded by paddy fields and palm trees that are swaying in the wind, are some of the reasons why many devotees flock to the Sree Madanantheswara Sidhivinayaka Temple. It is situated 8 km from the town of Kasaragod, on the banks of the majestic Madhuvahini River. People are especially enamored by its distinctive three-tiered dome, copper-plated roofs, and a cloistered courtyard. People believe in the purifying power of this holy location, where Lord Shiva is the main deity, but it is also extremely important to the devotees of Ganapathy.
Bela Church
Bela Church here is the oldest and dates from 1890. The Gothic-style Roman Catholic Church within the Mangalore Diocese is also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Sorrows. It began out as a small church thatched, and later relocated to the present site, far away from the area.
This statue was originally placed in the Kudrepady Church and then moved to the Bela Church. In fact, tradition has it that the parishioners were initially unable to push the lord, and had to give Mother Mary multiple prayers before they could do so. Since then the statue has gained much renown for being remarkable, and devotees, particularly its patrons, have also highly esteemed the church. Renovated in 2001, this church has no candlesticks or stained-glass windows like conventional churches and therefore looks distinctive and exudes beauty in the old world.
Kareem’s Forrest
Kareem’s Forrest, more than four decades ago, a man faced mockery and skepticism planting saplings and trees on a desolate hillside. Abdul Kareem would personally bring water on his twowheeler to cultivate the property, and today it is one of the most revered places in all of Kasaragod. Today Kareem’s Forest stretches over 32 acres. Located approximately 23 km east of Kanhangad City, this green paradise is famous for picnic spots, an equable climate, and spectacular pristine nature views.It is on the road to Parappa to Nileshwar, held in high regard for its numerous forest conservation features. Kareem’s Wood, though a sanctuary for birds, animals, and native medicinal plants, is dotted with a remarkable variety of indigenous plants and shrubs. People come here for fun, study, and a shift of tempo overall. It is an inspirational effort that has served as the focal point for others around the state for a project.
Maipadi Palace
Maipadi Kingdom, also known as Kumble Seeme, has authority between north Manjeshwar and south Chandragiri River. Similarly, areas between Adhur on the Western Ghats and Mogral foothills in the West transitioned under the rule of the Maipadi Kingdom. Someone who ruled the Kumble Seeme is popularly referred to as ‘Ramantharasugalu’ a hereditary title granted to the kings as they ascend the throne. This impressive structure is situated on the road from Kasaragod to Perla, about 8 km from the town of Kasaragod. The palace once had been the Kumbala King’s residence. Madhur, a village renowned for its Temple of Shrimad Anantheswara Vinayaka, is located about 3 km away. The closest train station is Kasaragod Railway Station.
Chandragiri Fort
Chandrigiri Fort Seeped in history, the Chandragiri Fort in Kasaragod lies at the confluence of the Payaswini River and the Arabian Sea. This 17th-century fort was built by Sivappa Naik of Bedanore. Situated a top hill ruins. People come here to watch the sunset from the ancient Kizhur Siva Temple at Chandragiri. While the nearby Bekal Fort is a tourist hotbed, those visiting this more serene location will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the lush landscape on display below.
